Classmates of the Sugar Creek Gobblers 2012 Weekend Outdoor Workshop (WOW) event participated in a wide variety of hands-on learning activities held at the Big Horn Ranch March 23rd-25th. The overnight 3-day agenda included archery, flintlock rifles, trapping, fly rod casting, turkey calling, clay target shooting, and bone identification. The event concluded with a live pheasant hunt and trout fishing.
This year’s weather was perfect for being outdoors and prompted 11 year old Jordan Platter to say “I loved being outside learning so much stuff. Man, I had a blast.” The kids were enthusiastic all weekend and many experienced the activities for the first time.
“It was the best time of my life” said 14 year old Jimmy Boyer. The WOW event is designed to give youth the opportunity to gain knowledge in different outdoor interests centered around Missouri’s outdoor heritage. “The event was impressive and amazing” stated Amy Gerow who attended with her son Jakob.
“I gained a deeper appreciation of Missouri’s outdoors and plan to be more active in them with my family”. Student Connor Wolff added, “There were so many things to do, the list goes on and on”. The Sugar Creek Gobblers are the McDonald County chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. The project was made possible through a partnership grant from MCHF, along with the following sponsors: Cornerstone Bank, Environmental Testing Group, McDonald County Telephone Company, Missouri Department of Conservation, Mustang Drug, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (Neosho Fish Hatchery).
