Recruitment of youth hunters continues to be a priority for MCHF and MDC. This hunt is being coordinated by Protection Division staff of MDC and Clay Howlett Memorial Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Pulaski County. The goal of the hunt is to provide an educational and safe hunting experience which fosters a life-long appreciation for the outdoors and hunting in Missouri. It is important to engage first time hunters and create positive experiences with them to instill the importance and appreciation for conservation in the state.
Both male and female participants between the ages of 11 and 15 who have not previously had the opportunity to hunt turkeys will be selected to participate. The participants will be required to attend and successfully pass a Missouri Hunter Education Skills Session Class. The hunters will attend a field day prior to their hunt where they will be instructed in management and history of the wild turkey in Missouri, turkey hunting strategies, turkey hunting safety, how to pattern a shotgun and shotgun shooting skills.
The youth will be guided on the day of their hunt by a mentor who will be a conservation agent, NWTF member, or landowner and also their parent or guardian. Because of the number of people who will be accompanying the youth on their hunt, portable hunting blinds will be available.
