Every year the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District conducts eight farm tours for elementary students, with representatives from the Missouri Department of Conservation, Natural Resource Conservation Service and the University of Missouri Extension present. These tours consist of a series of stops consisting of farming practices, life on that specific farm, and conservation of natural resources, including soil conservation, forestry, wildlife and water quality. One stop that is offered at four of these tours is a fishing stop. At this stop there is a brief discussion of the importance of water quality, plus the added benefit you get by being able to enjoy various freshwater activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing, followed by a session where the students get to fish.
The goal of this project is to purchase 50 new rod/reel combos, four tackle boxes and tack to support the 50 fishing rods. Each year there are approximately 800 students that participate in these farm tours, with the goal of recruiting at least five percent of the students to become interested in fishing.
