North Central Missouri College (NCMC) is located in the heart of the Midwest with the main campus in downtown Trenton, MO. Campus facilities have more than doubled in recent years to include nine structures for instruction, a student center, two residence halls, an art gallery and a community center/gymnasium. The most recent addition is the Barton Farm Campus location 1.2 miles south of Trenton.
The Barton Campus opened in August 2011. The farm consists of 138 acres donated by the Elizabeth and Arthur Barton Trust. The Missouri Department of Conservation entered into a Community Assistance Program agreement to help make user improvements to the pond. NCMC Barton Farm is a demonstration/applied learning environment with a focus of crop and livestock production, as well as natural resource management. Run-off to the pond is filtered through waterways, sediment basins and through a unique tier of impoundments to first consist of a small wetland controlled by a Dozier valve which then flows into a smaller herp pond and finally into the two-acre impoundment. Water from the paved parking lots runs into warm season grass bio-swales, through a tile system into the wetland. Finally a riparian buffer demonstration area has been established on the east side of the pond.
While the pond facility is fully functional there is a great need for an open-style shelter house given the multitude of activities that currently take place around this area of the campus. Currently groups who do use the facility often bring pop-up style type canopies. While this is serviceable it is not convenient, especially for larger user groups. This grant helps to provide a basic shelter that would greatly improve the functionality of the area and provides a more stabled place for disabled users.
